Can I make a Qualified Charitable Distribution through my IRA to the ACLU Foundation?
Thank you for your interest in making a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA to the ACLU Foundation. We are so grateful that you are considering such a thoughtful gift.
Federal law allows people age 70½ or older to make direct transfers up to $108,000 per year per person to charitable organizations from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), without the withdrawal being treated as taxable income. The withdrawal can be counted toward your Required Minimum Distribution.
Most IRA charitable gifts are made by asking your IRA custodian (such as Fidelity, Schwab, or Vanguard) to send the contribution directly to the ACLU Foundation. If you have a self-directed “Checkbook IRA,” you have the option to make the gift yourself.
If your custodian needs to send the gift on your behalf, please use this sample letter to notify them of your intention to make a gift from your IRA to the ACLU Foundation.
If you have a Checkbook IRA, please make your check payable to the American Civil Liberties Foundation Inc. and send it to:
